Equality Action Tour stops in Kalamazoo to discuss discrimination against gay and transgender Michiganders

KALAMAZOO – A coalition of advocacy organizations is launching its Equality Action Tour, a series of town hall events to promote equality for all in Michigan. The fourth event in the series will take place at Food Dance in Kalamazoo on Wednesday, June 8 at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. It will focus on the social, economic, and legal impact of discrimination faced by gay and transgender people and their families.

Current Michigan law does not prohibit discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation, leaving many at risk of being fired, evicted or denied services because they are gay or transgender.

The sponsoring coalition, Unity Michigan, was formed in 2007 to advocate for equality. Unity Michigan is specifically working to promote policies that protect gay and transgender citizens and their families from discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodations.

Light food and refreshments will be provided, including beer and wine.

WHEN: Wednesday, June 8 at 7 p.m.

WHERE: Food Dance, 401 E. Michigan Ave. #100, Kalamazoo, MI

WHO: Panelists include former State Senator Buzz Thomas, Equality Michigan Executive Director Denise Brogan-Kator and ACLU of Michigan Legislative Director Shelli Weisberg.

The event is free and open to the public. Local activists, members of faith communities, community leaders, elected officials, students and individuals interested in learning more are encouraged to attend.

SPONSORED by Unity Michigan, a coalition comprised of ACLU of Michigan, Affirmations and Equality Michigan.
